Hope in Action for Africa

We believe everyone deserves a decent place to live.

Change begins when people choose to get involved and build together, within their own communities and across the world.

Through Global Village, our international volunteer programme, we bring together teams of volunteers from Romania each year to travel to Africa and support Habitat for Humanity’s work alongside local communities. Together, we help build homes, connect with people from different cultures and gain a deeper understanding of how access to affordable housing helps create stronger, more resilient communities

The story of Habitat for Humanity Romania’s international volunteering programme began in 2018, when the first team of Romanian volunteers travelled to Malawi. In the Lilongwe community, they worked alongside local families to help build two homes for two single mothers and their children, who lived with the constant fear that the next flood would wash away their homes.

Since then, three more teams of Romanian volunteers have travelled to Malawi (2019), Kenya (2024) and Zambia (2026), helping four more families build safer homes and brighter futures.

What you need to know about international volunteering

The programme is coordinated by Habitat for Humanity Romania in partnership with the local Habitat for Humanity organisation in the host country. From your pre-departure preparation to your time on the build site, Habitat teams will support you every step of the way, so you can focus on the experience and the difference you’re making.

Your volunteer journey begins long before you arrive in Africa. Before departure, each volunteer runs a personal fundraising campaign to help support the project they will join.

The funds raised help cover the accommodation, meals, local transportation, travel insurance, a donation to Habitat for Humanity to help purchase building materials.
International flights are arranged and paid for separately by each volunteer.

To participate, volunteers must be at least 18 years old and sign a volunteer agreement.
