At Habitat for Humanity Romania, we meet many courageous and inspiring women every day—mothers who, through determination and resilience, turn challenges into new beginnings and rebuild their lives one step at a time.
Alexandra is one of them. A single mother whose days begin with her children in mind and end with plans for tomorrow.
Life has never been easy for Alexandra. She grew up with very little and often had to face life’s challenges on her own, when a helping hand would have made all the difference. As a teenager, Alexandra worked to finish high school while helping support her family. Later, she raised her two sons on her own, determined to give them the stability and opportunities they deserved.
Hard-working and determined, she never gave up hope. Two years ago, her life changed when she moved into her Habitat home.
Today, it is a bright house filled with flowers, where her sons, Ionuț and Bogdan, enjoy the comfort and security of a real home. Ionuț is now in high school, while Bogdan, now in Year 6, is pursuing his passion for karate and has even become a national champion.
Alexandra worked side by side with the volunteers who helped build her home. She took time off work to complete her required volunteer hours and often divided her day between her job and the Habitat build site.
Her sons were by her side every step of the way. They even visited the build site and became little interpreters, helping their mother communicate with international volunteers.

Today, quiet evenings are spent together in the kitchen. Bogdan loves to cook—his speciality is tiramisu. Both boys help around the house without much persuasion, although every now and then one of them asks, “Mum, do we really have to?” Alexandra smiles, knowing that life’s challenges have made them stronger and taught them to face life with confidence.
When we visited the family in the autumn of 2024, Alexandra told us how grateful she is to have neighbours she can always count on. Her children have made new friends, and she treasures the sense of belonging she has found in her community.
Many other single mothers, just like Alexandra, still need support.
